Difficult endings

Be clear about an ending. Not cruel.

An ending can be painful even when the wording is considerate. The aim is to communicate your decision honestly, not to find a sentence that removes every difficult feeling.

Be clear about the decision

Do not describe a final decision as a temporary pause unless that is genuinely what you mean.

Avoid putting someone on trial

You can explain your decision without listing everything you think is wrong with the other person.

Only promise what you intend

Leave out promises of future friendship, a later reunion, or ongoing contact unless you genuinely want them.

Choose a safe way to communicate

The right setting depends on the situation. You do not owe an in-person conversation when it would put you at risk.

Illustrative example · the first reaction
“Maybe we just need time. I don’t know. You make everything impossible.”
Another way to say it
“I’ve decided to end our relationship. I know this is painful, but I don’t want to suggest a break when my decision is final.”

Kindness does not require uncertainty about what you have decided.

An example is not a script you have to follow. Adapt it to what is true for you. Clearer wording cannot guarantee a particular response.
